I had to deal with the new and interesting opus by Slagmaur, which
claimed to play the only “True Norwegian Black Metal”.
Now, FORGOTTEN WOODS come along with their new
album Race Of Cain and claim the same for themselves. Well, one
might argue if Slagmaur’s stuff is still Black Metal, but
it definitely has something special while FORGOTTEN WOODS
simply seem to suffer from a huge amount of hubris.
This already becomes obvious when listening to the noisy, excessively
distorted intro: Lacking imagination as well as creativity, the
band goes to work. The few spots marking something like a good
idea or riff (e.g. in Here, In The Obsession or Third
Eye) standing out of the monotonous mush, are tramped down
by the abysmal production. The production might probably be meant
to sound like “true underground”, but in fact it’s
just subsurface. Everything sounds undefined, dull and toneless.
After a short while, you will most likely not even try to find
something of interest any more.
Not very convincing, but at least FORGOTTEN WOODS
made me write a short review, something that does not happen too
often *g*
